2. New Stakeholder Engagement Policy Statement Published
CIWEM recently published a Policy Position Statement (PPS) on Stakeholder Engagement. The PPS reviews the current situation relating to stakeholder engagement in environmental decision-making and outlines the areas where further action is needed. In it, CIWEM recommends that all public, private and voluntary organisations preparing policies, plans, programmes, and projects relating to the environment should:

CIWEM’s corporate identity is being established, with the design and implementation of a new logo. You will now see it in use on new banner stands, posters, conference programmes and other marketing material.
The logo has been designed to establish a simple, modern and recognisable identity. The logo will help us to stand out from other professional bodies and chartered institutions, particularly CIWM which uses a very similar coat of arms to ours. The design is extremely versatile and will help build up a recognisable identity around just ‘CIWEM’.
The CIWEM crest is being retained as an integral part of our identity but will be reserved for use on more formal occasions, as well as the Water and Environment Journal. The crest is currently undergoing a minor update in terms of colour enhancement.
If you have any queries over usage or require the logo, please contact emily@ciwem.org
4. Journal Changes – Seeking Global Reviewers
From January 2006 CIWEM’s Journal – Water and Environment Journal – has been published on behalf of CIWEM by Blackwell Publishing; in line with these changes we are increasing our reviewer database. Reviewers peer-review technical papers to determine their suitability for publication and advise on any amendments or revisions necessary such that papers are credible and accurate; enhance knowledge and understanding of water and environmental issues; promote sustainable development and are a credit to the standing and reputation of CIWEM and the profession.
This is a great opportunity to be involved in the work of the Institution and be the first to read exciting new research. We welcome applications from anyone with suitable expertise in a subject within the scope of water and environmental management, especially from those overseas. For more information or to submit your CV please contact Joanna Cooper ( jcooper@ciwem.org ).
A variety of CIWEM publications from over the years will be available at discount rates of at least half price over the coming months. This includes 'Risk Assessment for Environmental Professionals' at only £5! For updates please see the ‘News’ section of the CIWEM website ( www.ciwem.org ) or contact Joanna Cooper jcooper@ciwem.org for further details.
The Institution is also selling a selection of its non-CIWEM books, journals, conference proceedings and other miscellaneous publications which are no longer required. Topics covered include civil engineering, hydrology, the water environment, drinking water and effluent treatment, sewerage and drainage, global processes, pollution, chemicals, ecology, biology, toxicology, overseas development, mathematical modelling, policy and legislation, history and a selection of antiquarian books. The sale of these is being handled by Dr David Gasking, a long-standing member of CIWEM. For more information please visit: http://www.ciwem.org/publications/book_sale.asp .
CIWEM Conferences are continuing to be well attended and regarded. Outputs from recent conferences may now be found on the CIWEM website at: http://www.ciwem.org.uk/events/outputs.asp

10. Wanted by the CIWEM Accreditation Board
CIWEM currently accredits many university & college courses and are looking for both academics and practitioners to participate in the Panels who undertake this process on behalf of the Institution.
No previous experience of this kind of activity would be required as training will be offered.
The Board are looking for practitioners from the whole cross section of CIWEM activities.
If you are interested in becoming involved with this vital activity on behalf of the Institution please send a current cv and brief covering letter or email to Rosemary Butler, at John St., rbutler@ciwem.org.uk or if you would like to discuss any aspect of participating in an Accreditation Panel then please contact Rosemary on 020 7831 3110.
This year CIWEM got together a team to take part in the Michelob ULTRA London Triathlon on behalf of WaterAid. This involved a 1500m swim, 40km cycle and 10km run, which took place on the 5th August. The team successfully completed their challenge in 2hrs 53mins placing them 198th out of 314.
The team reached their fundraising target but now hopes to exceed it and raise £2000 for the WaterAid project in Zambia, which is the CIWEM chosen project-link for this year. Zambia is one of the poorest countries in Southern Africa, poverty is increasing and health is deteriorating. WaterAid estimates that only 28 percent of people have access to water and that 24 percent of people have sanitation. These factors have contributed to a dramatically declining life expectancy that now stands at 37 years.
WaterAid has been working in the region for over 10 years and marked a number of achievements. We would like to support their continued good work and raise as much as possible towards this worthy cause. Sponsoring the CIWEM team is extremely easy and can be done online at http://www.justgiving.com/teamciwem
A big thank you to all those who have donated so far your contribution is greatly value by the team and WaterAid.
For any other information please contact Jo Cooper jcooper@ciwem.org
12. Cranfield Revamps Water Sciences CPD Programme
Following the recent announcement of significant investment in the area of Natural Resources, Cranfield University’s Water Sciences group is now in a position to present a revitalised and extended CPD short course programme to the waste, water and environmental sectors.
A total of 30 courses are now offered by the group, run over one, two or five days.
Commenting on the revised CPD programme, the Head of Centre, Prof. Simon Judd, emphasised the variety of topics covered and the flexibility of delivery; ‘We have used our core MSc delivery programme as a skeleton for the short courses. This means that the range of topics we cover at MSc level is now fully reflected in the short course programme. It also provides greater choice and flexibility for professionals who often have significant constraints on how much time they can commit to ongoing training.”
Courses cover the scientific, technological, engineering and sustainable management aspects of water resources treatment and management and are suitable for professionals in a variety of sectors. For example, sessions on risk management, desalination and conservation & reuse have been added to complement more traditional Water Sciences fare based on conventional treatment technologies.
The new CPD programme runs from October through to March. Discounts are available for members of British Water, the Chartered Institution of Water & Environmental Management, Institute of Civil Engineers, Institute of Water Officers, International Water Association, and Institute of Chemical Engineers as well as those booking multiple events.
Further information can be found at www.cranfield.ac.uk/sas/water/cpd . To register for any of these courses please telephone +44 (0) 1234 754086, or email appliedsciences@cranfield.ac.uk .
RedR’s expertise in disaster relief
RedR is committed to making aid agencies more effective by training, recruiting and supporting individuals and organisations working in emergency relief and development. RedR believes that strengthening local capacity is the key to helping communities rebuild their lives. Developing knowledge within the aid community helps to ensure that positive changes will last even after the relief workers have left. Recently RedR has started to respond directly in disaster-affected areas. Following the earthquake in Pakistan, 2,500 local and international relief workers benefited from RedR training courses in water management, rural sanitation, and the technical aspects of closing temporary camps.

Ways to get involved:
Chinese Delegations visit CIWEM
As referenced in the last edition of E-news, CIWEM recently hosted a visit from the China Society for Environmental Sciences (CSES) who were particularly interested in contaminated land and soil pollution and protection. The Chinese Government has commissioned a study that will look at all aspects of soil management and issues related to water, air and waste in terms of the impact on soil. This was the primary interest of the delegation, which consisted of representatives from the CSES, Dalian Environment Monitoring Centre, Yi Chang Environment Monitoring Centre, Guizhou Environment Protection Industry Assessment Centre, Jinan Environmental Inspection Management Centre, Pingxiang Environmental Protection Bureau and Zhangzhou Environmental Protection Bureau.
The group wanted to know how the Environment Agency in England and Wales functions and manages the permitting and abstraction licensing system, plus they were keen to understand how the Agency manages all other aspects of the environment, in particular the regulation of waste management. The Chinese explained that in China there are three main ministries involved: the Ministry of Construction, Ministry of Water and State Environment Protection Agency, then the provincial and local government off-shoots of these Ministries. This is further complicated in autonomous areas such as Shanghai where mayors have the overall power.

United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) sets an overall framework for intergovernmental efforts to tackle the challenge posed by climate change. The convention entered into force in 1994 and to date 189 countries have ratified the treaty. Under the convention, governments gather and share information on greenhouse gas emissions, national policies, best practices and national strategies for addressing emissions and adapting to the expected impacts on economies. The Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC brings together national experts from around the world and observers including organizations with proven credibility and knowledge in the field. CIWEM has applied for admission as an observer organization to the Conference of the Parties (COP) of the UNFCCC and the institution hopes to be admitted during an early session of the COP in Nairobi later this year. Further information on the climate change process can be found at www.unfccc.int and members can contact Paul Horton to discuss CIWEM's involvement at paul@ciwem.org

Nanotechnology Perceptions
CIWEM members are being offered a year’s subscription to Nanotechnology Perceptions at half price £24, or individual issues at £8 each. The aim of "Nanotechnology Perceptions" is to raise awareness of nanotechnology across a broad spectrum of the world's professional, political and industrial leadership, and indeed the general public through well-written and highly readable articles. The articles present the state of the art in its widest context while retaining the scientific and engineering roots, but also address the moral and ethical issues raised by the possibility, for example, of personal desktop nanofactories able to fabricate most common goods using nothing more than hydrocarbon gas as raw material, and microscale robots circulating in the human bloodstream capable of repairing wear and tear.
