2. Society for the Environment granted Royal Charter
We are delighted to announce that at a meeting of the Privy Council on the 6th May the Society for the Environment was granted its Royal Charter.
The signing and sealing of the Charter will take place on the 1st July after which the Institution will be able to award the title Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) to suitably qualified members.
CIWEM has been working hard and with great commitment, with other institutions to create the new umbrella body. The Society has a co-ordinating role in environmental affairs and it will also act as a Regulatory Body for the environment profession. It will also play a part in harnessing environmental effort and raise the status of environmental practitioners through the new qualification.
All established Fellows and Members of CIWEM will shortly be invited to apply for the title via ‘grandparenting’ rights. This is a fast track route to CEnv allowed by the Privy Council for a limited time period (1 year from the 1st July) and is a window of opportunity we hope all established members will consider taking.
All those who apply for membership of CIWEM after the 1st July will also be given the opportunity to be registered as CEnv at the same time as their application is being considered for full membership.
The creation of the Chartered Environmentalist qualification is a sign of a maturing environmental profession and the importance that government, regulators and industry place on the need for a high level qualification that recognises excellence in environmental practice. And, it will create greater public and employer confidence in the work that environmental professionals do. This is a great step forward for the profession and a great opportunity for you the environmental professional.
We look forward to receiving your completed application in due course, this will be circulated to you shortly, but if in the meantime you have any questions about the process, or qualification, please contact the CIWEM Membership Department, 020 7831 3110, or e-mail membership@ciwem.org.uk. Alternatively details are available on the SocEnv website at www.socenv.org.uk
3. CIWEM Campaign – What Price Water?
Launching a spring campaign focusing on the value of water, CIWEM Executive Director Nick Reeves expressed disappointment about the Government's silence on water and the need to use it efficiently, despite some areas of the UK being drier than parts of the Middle East. Indeed, he condemned plans to build thousands of homes in the south-east as relying on unrealistic ‘predict and provide' models, rather than sustainable principles.
There has been public discussion recently about the cost of water, but little about its value. CIWEM wants people to realise the huge amount of effort and expense that goes into looking after water environments, moving water around and treating it so that we can enjoy the benefits. CIWEM is asking the public to look at their relationship with water and to get a free water meter installed for World Environment Day on 5 June, as well as pledging to reduce their water use in 4 specific ways.
CIWEM also wants water utilities and the Government to get moving on innovative water charges that encourage people to be more efficient with the wet stuff at home. A Water Saving Trust, like the body for energy conservation, is proposed to co-ordinate messages and initiatives to educate the public, and including a discrete water topic in the National Curriculum is tipped as a way to kick-start an early understanding of water's importance. CIWEM would also like to see increased investment in research into the reuse of greywater (collected household wash water) and treated sewage effluent.
Nick Reeves said: “It's a sad fact that because most people pay a flat rate for their water, they don't see a cash benefit to saving it. But water's about more than that – just think of the number of people who enjoy walking by a clean river, fishing in a lake, swimming in the sea, let alone drinking litres of the stuff.
“With climate change likely to place increased strain on water supplies in future years, it can't be right that we continue to allow millions of gallons of perfectly good water to flow away every day,” he added.
For further information about CIWEM’s campaign visit the CIWEM website at the following address: http://www.ciwem.com/press/campaign
4. Looking for a Consultant, Contractor or Manufacturer? Try CIWEM’s Professionals Directory
CIWEM’s Professionals Directory is an online service that directs environment sector business towards directory members. In the past year and a half, a large number of leads for diverse global environment sector projects have been passed to directory members. Members of the directory pay an annual fee, dependent on the size of their business. The service is free for people seeking the services of an environment sector professional.
We are keen to increase the number of directory members and will be widely promoting the Professionals Directory in 2004 to further boost the number of leads for members. It is easy to register for the directory via CIWEM’s website www.ciwem.com/directory/.
A key part of the success of the directory so far has been that all potential business coming through CIWEM’s office is passed to directory members. Much of the business channeled towards directory members is unlikely to have been offered elsewhere – CIWEM’s position as a diverse global environment sector organization has led many organisations and individuals to contact the Institution seeking consultants, contractors or manufacturers. The potential contracts offered to directory members are normally projects where CIWEM was the first and only port of call in the UK.
If you would like further information about the Directory, please visit the website or contact Justin Taberham (E-Mail: Justin@ciwem.com).
5. Water Framework Directive Conference Papers on CD – Available to Order!
The aim of the current series of CIWEM Water Framework Directive (WFD) conferences is to produce a resource that enables a wider understanding of the Directive. Following the conference held on 12 November 2003 on the Ecological Implications of the Directive, a conference CD (version 1) was produced for delegates. This is now being updated with information from the May 2004 WFD Diffuse Pollution conference, and will also include a full e-copy of the 2002 Diffuse Pollution Impacts Manual (was available as hardcopy for £50). The version 2 CD will be available from August 2004 but can be ordered now.
Delegates who attended the WFD Diffuse Pollution event will receive this as a part of their registration fee, however, it will be available from CMS, Candle Cottage, Kempley, Glos., GL18 2BU or bob.earll@coastms.co.uk at a price of £45 including Postage and Packing and VAT. The CD will be updated after following events.
The Water Supply and Quality Panel welcomed two new members to its recent meeting, Adriana Hulsmann of Kiwa Water Research in the Netherlands and Jo Parker of Watershed Associates. The Panel discussed its forthcoming event on Getting to Grips with Quality at the Tap (15th June 2004), its workshop on Risk Based Approaches for Drinking Water Quality Management at the CIWEM National Conference in September and an event on risk management in water supply to be held in Glasgow in December.
They also worked on a Policy Position Statement (PPS) on Lead in Drinking Water and discussed other proposed PPSs including Disinfection, Infrastructure Maintenance and Cryptosporidium. At the end of the meeting, the Panel held a ‘Question and Answer’ session with Geoff Bateman, CIWEM Senior Vice President. Subjects discussed included the structure of CIWEM, the future direction of the Panel and ways of making the best use of Panel members’ skills and competences.
7. CIWEM Photographic Competition 2004
2004 sees the launch of the WEM (Water and Environment Magazine) environmental photographer of the year competition. 13. Flood Risk Management and Consequences for London Lecture
The Worshipful Company of Water Conservators and the Worshipful Company of Insurers are co-operating to host this key lecture. They have been supported by a number of sponsors and hence are privileged to be able to offer the lecture free of charge. It will be held at the Institution of Electrical Engineers, I Savoy Place, London, WC2.
London, like many other low lying areas, is at a risk of flooding. This risk is managed by good planning, early warnings and the development of protection assets like the Thames Barrier, but prudence dictates that businesses in London are alert to the risks and have business continuity plans. Many other areas in the Country are also at risk and there are significant implications for insurance companies. Flooding is becoming an increasing risk as our climate is changing. Significant increases in investment in flood risk management and a greater understanding of the need for planning controls are two of many practical consequences of this change.
This is a very important lecture, which will provide an insight into one of the key contemporary environmental issues and its impact on business. It will be held on 3rd June, 2004. Those interested in attending could notify Ralph Riley, Clerk to the Water Conservators, on waterlco@aol.com.
