This email is being delivered to around 2000 subscribers in more than 30 countries worldwide.
This month we are focusing heavily on a number of events which are being offered in the coming months. CIWEM is producing an increasingly diverse range of conferences which are keenly priced and of a high quality. European Flooding, Air Quality and Industry and Transport and the Environment are just three of the wide range of events on offer over the coming year and we are constantly looking to develop our portfolio of events. Add to this the plethora of locally run events developed by CIWEM's Branches and Groups and there is a lot on offer.
Elsewhere, we are expanding the resource available to those seeking a career in the environment with a new, freely available chapter on working in Planning added to our careers web pages at www.environmental-careers.info. If you are keen to get involved with the policy and technical work of the Institution and have experience in air quality and management issues, we are seeking new members for our Air Panel, which is leading on the development of the Air Quality and Industry conference. We are also making it quicker and easier for authors to send papers to us for peer review for the Journal, by making more of the process electronic.

1. European Flooding: Managing the Risks - June 17-18, 2003
A decade ago the predictions of extreme weather prompted by climate change seemed remote both in the UK and Europe; however the major floods of the last 3 years have provided powerful reminders of the costs and threats that we are now facing. There is no doubt that major flood events are now a tragic reality rather than a hypothesis. The disaster in Central Europe in the summer of 2002 focused attention on this not least because of its huge financial implications. This two-day Conference will consider past, present and future problems in flood risk management. As well as looking back fifty years, speakers from France, Austria, the Netherlands, the Czech Repuplic and the UK will focus on changes in extremes of weather and how to cope with them; lessons learned from actual flood alleviation schemes; the implications of recent Directives, including the Water Framework Directive, how they will need to be improved, and how these issues should affect planning and sustainability in the future.This is a European scale challenge and discussions are currently underway on how European community initiatives at policy, legislation and economic levels can help address this issue. Meetings between UK and European groups notably The European Water Association, CIWEM and the Environment Agency have identified the need for a high level conference reflecting on these recent major flood events which is designed to share the fast developing knowledge in this area.
The meeting is based at the Thames Barrier, one of the most significant engineering solutions to this challenge found in the World. The conference and workshops are aimed at senior technical management that are engaged with flooding issues. Technical visits to the barrier and to view other works on the Thames will be a key part of the meeting.
This conference will be of interest to anyone responsible for flood warning, alleviation strategies or the management of river systems, together with all consulting engineers, environmental scientists and academics involved in the analysis of events and design of such schemes.

2. Air Quality and Industry - Future Challenges
This conference, organised by the CIWEM Air Panel, has been designed to brief delegates on the implications for industry of the introduction of IPPC and in particular to discuss ways of assessing and managing emission impacts on air quality. In addition, the conference will facilitate a dialogue between industrialists, regulators and other environmental practitioners on the future implications of tightening environmental regulation and issues that pose challenges for the industry now and into the future.
Conference Objectives - The conference will help industrialists to gain a better understanding of the air quality requirements of IPPC and what operators need to do to obtain a permit to operate an installation that is covered under IPPC. It will also describe best practice in the subject area of air quality impact assessment, highlighting issues that are of importance to industrialists. A number of informative case studies will be included to illustrate aspects of air quality impact assessment.

3. 2003 CIWEM Presidential Conference
The 2003 CIWEM Presidential Conference, 'Transport and the Environment - Green to Go' will be held on 26th June at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Birdcage Walk, London.
Britain is one of the most densely populated and urbanised of countries. The notion of 'green' transport systems presents many challenges. For example, how can we develop modern and clean public transport systems without compromising our built and landscape heritage? The motor car broke all social barriers, brought freedom of movement and opportunity for many people. Now, the popularity of the car has brought significant problems of pollution, congestion and a reliance on a source of energy that is unsustainable. Even more significantly, the motor industry is ingrained into the psyche and the economy of the world. How will these conflicts be resolved? How can we get from a to b and protect the environment too?
Whatever your position on the transport / environment debate everyone agrees that something must be done. Travel and freedom of movement is one of the most basic human instincts. In the context of a growing human population how can we get people where they want to be when they want to and rreduce our contribution to global warming? This Conference will provide some of the answers. CIWEM has brought together - for the first time in a single venue - politicians, scientists, engineers, media commentators, transport managers and even blue sky thinkers, to debate the issues and set out the solutions to one of the most perplexing and exciting social conundrums of modern times.
The purpose of the conference is to assess and understand the science which underpins decisions on transport policy and provision; to consider the benefits and disadvantages which arise from initiatives to 'green' the transport infrastructure; to present current thinking and research on transport systems and the environmental imperative that drives it.

4. Assist with the Technical Work of CIWEM - Air Panel Members Wanted!
CIWEM's Air Panel is a relatively new Technical Panel, having been formally set up in April 2000. Its aim is to bridge the gap between specialists and hands-on field workers in air-related issues. The Panel's terms of reference give it a wide remit within the following areas: air pollution sources; monitoring; modelling systems/tools for assessment; impacts, management and policy (health and environmental); underlying science and processes; climate change; public attitude/perception to air pollution; odour; and Local Authority Air Quality Management.
The Panel is charged with a number of outputs including events, consultation responses, policy statements, technical advice, representation and publications. Several Panel members represent CIWEM at forums and events. The Panel currently meets three times a year at CIWEM's London office, and members are in frequent contact via e-mail.
We are fortunate to have an active and knowledgeable membership with a wide range of expertise. However, the Panel is currently looking to increase its membership - anyone interested in joining the Panel should send their CV to Helen Wilson, Policy Officer at CIWEM Email: helen@ciwem.com
5. Guidance on Saltmarsh Creation and Management
CIWEM is involved in a partnership project with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and HR Wallingford to produce best practice guidance on saltmarsh creation and management. The project aims to facilitate a rapid advance in the development and implementation of saltmarsh creation and management schemes.
In order to address the full spectrum of technical, political and socio-economic issues relating to this topic, the project will produce a comprehensive guidance document aimed at all interested players e.g. conservationists, planners, engineers, consultants and regulators. To illustrate the application of the approaches described, this document will include a selection of British case studies.
In addition to the concise guide, a technical lever arch manual will be produced giving detailed technical accounts of specific schemes implemented or proposed in recent years. This will be targeted at an audience of specialists active in the field.
The principal author/editor of both publications is Dr A.S. Nottage, an aquatic ecologist actively involved in saltmarsh creation schemes since the early 1990s. In addition, specific sections of the guide will be written by other specialists in the field. It is envisaged that the guide will be published in spring 2004.

6. New Planning Chapter Added to CIWEM Careers Website
A new chapter was recently added to the expanding web pages developed in support of CIWEM's recently published book, Environmental Careers - The Inside Guide, detailing the opportunities available for those looking for an environmentally focused job in Planning. Produced with the assistance of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI), the chapter provides information on the sector, current issues, the main employers, job titles, likely salaries and profiles a planning officer.
This information will be added to the next issue of Environmental Careers - The Inside Guide and, in the meantime, it is freely available on the web at:
www.environmental-careers.info where there is also a chapter on Finding a Job in the Environment, a chapter listing and ordering information.
7. Water Framework Directive Events
Such is the importance of the Water Framework Directive that CIWEM is committed to developing a coherent and structured approach to a series of conferences on the subject. This approach will develop continuity of thinking, especially in terms of the information provided to participants and the products that CIWEM produces. The next event planned on the subject is:

11. Electronic Submissions to the Journal
The Notes for the Guidance of Authors submitting papers to the CIWEM Journal have recently been revised. The main change is that, for environmental reasons, authors are now being asked to submit electronic copies of their paper (by e-mail or on floppy disk/CD), as well as one hard copy.
