1. CIWEM Seeks YOUR VIEWS on Future Conference Themes

CIWEM organises around twenty national conferences per year on a broad range of subjects within Water and Environmental Management. Our conferences cater for a diverse audience and we choose those themes which most demand inclusive debate and action. We’re planning the 2007 Conference Programme and we’re keen to ensure that the themes accurately reflect what CIWEM Members and the wider environmental profession really want.

Please tell us:

  1. Which broad themes you would like to see more conferences on?
  2. What issues are on the horizon that you would like to see debated?
  3. What you think of our current areas of focus?

Please email your thoughts, be they key words, bullet points, or a wider discussion of your views to Harriet Greene ( hgreene@ciwem.org ) and help us deliver what YOU want to see.

2. CIWEM International Network

CIWEM’s international activities continue to develop and following recent articles in the CIWEM Business Briefing and CIWEM E-news, the Institution is pleased to announce the launch of the CIWEM International Network. It is not intended to be a panel or a formal group but largely an e-mail contact group which holds the occasional meeting and has the principal aim of inputting into the development of international plans for CIWEM, by:

These points are not exhaustive and they will be refined and developed further in discussion with the members of the network.

The International Network will be formally launched through CIWEM Business Briefing July/August edition.

3. Dolphins at Risk

Pile driving and industrial noise may adversely affect dolphin behaviour, communication and breeding, according to a scientific paper in CIWEM’s Water and Environment Journal.

Bottlenose dolphins that reside in designated Special Areas of Conservation throughout the UK, including Dorset, Anglesey and Cornwall, might be at risk from pile driving. The frequency range of pile driving noise could interfere with their ability to communicate, find food and avoid predators. This has the potential to affect their behaviour, health and their ability to breed successfully. Lactating females and young calves might be particularly vulnerable.

Recently more than 600 dolphins died mysteriously off the Indian Ocean archipelago in Zanzibar. The phenomenon has created a stir among marine experts, with varying theories that the Indian Ocean Bottlenose dolphins may have been hurt by pollution or underwater noise.

Author, Dr. Jonathan David, MCIWEM, suggests that mitigation measures be put in place to help prevent any adverse impacts upon dolphin populations. Operations should be restricted to low tide and suspended during calving season, an exclusion zone should be monitored before any activity starts and marine work should cease if a dolphin enters the work area. Other innovative ideas include creating an air bubble curtain and creating a ramped warning signal to give dolphins time to leave the area before work commences.

Dr David also calls for further research into the reactions of marine mammals to industrial noise to help mitigate future effects in relation to the increase in off-shore industry, such as the construction of wind farms.

Other wide ranging topics covered in the new edition of the Water and Environment Journal include the Water Framework Directive, the Gaza Strip, environmental sustainability and oil spills in Egyptian waters.

The Water and Environment Journal is The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management’s main peer-reviewed publication and can trace its origins back to the 1890’s. And with a new Editor-in Chief, Professor David Butler, and a new partnership with Blackwell Publishing, the Journal is moving from strength to strength.

CIWEM’s Journal is breaking new ground by being the first in the sector to be printed on 100 percent post-consumer waste recycled paper, as is appropriate for a publication dedicated to promoting environmental best practice.

As David Butler says, ‘Our goal is to build on the Journal’s deserved reputation by publishing the best papers in the field from around the world. I hope that our readers will enjoy the improved accessibility and enhanced layout and I am confident that our new partnership with Blackwell Publishing will help us to extend its worldwide readership.’

The Journal is published quarterly. CIWEM members receive a copy as part of their membership.

4. Pro Vita Triathalon Team

This year CIWEM has got together a team to take part in the Michelob ULTRA London Triathlon on behalf of WaterAid. This will involve a 1500m swim, 40km cycle and 10km run which will take place on the 5th or 6th August.

The team hopes to raise £1500 for the WaterAid project in Zambia, which is the CIWEM chosen project-link for this year. Zambia is one of the poorest countries in Southern Africa, poverty is increasing and health is deteriorating. WaterAid estimates that only 28 percent of people have access to water and that 24 percent of people have sanitation. These factors have contributed to a dramatically declining life expectancy that now stands at 37 years.

WaterAid has been working in the region for over 10 years and marked a number of achievements. We would like to support their continued good work and raise as much as possible over the coming months towards this worthy cause. Sponsoring the CIWEM team is extremely easy and can be done online at http://www.justgiving.com/teamciwem
For any other information please contact Jo Cooper jcooper@ciwem.org

Please dig deep and sponsor our team!

5. CIWEM Website Poll – Retrofitting Water Saving Devices

This month we have a new poll question on the front page of the CIWEM website (left-hand side, scroll down a little). With the current concern regarding pressure on water resources in the South-East of England, we would like to know your views on whether the Government should subsidise a scheme to retrofit houses with water saving devices? Have your say at:
www.ciwem.org . You can also view the results of recent polls.

9. WEDC Course Accreditation

An accreditation Panel recently visited WEDC at Loughborough University to assess two Masters Degree courses for CIWEM accreditation.

The courses; MSc Water & Environmental Management and MSc Water & Waste Engineering are delivered by both taught and distance learning.

The Panel were particularly impressed with the practical aspects of the curriculum, the international experience of the staff delivering the course, the quality of the teaching material which was found to be excellent for both distance learning and taught modules and the high calibre of the students following the course.

The Panel recommended that accreditation should be approved for 5 years commencing with the intake of the autumn 2005.

The students following the accredited courses qualify for free Student membership for the duration of their course and for free transfer to Graduate member on completion provided this is undertaken within a year of graduation.

10. New Website Launched to Tackle Business Waste

A new website encouraging Scottish businesses to recycle more of their waste has been officially launched by the Scottish Waste Awareness Group (SWAG).

The new online resource - entitled Waste Aware Business - contains a Business Recycling Directory giving firms access to recycling service providers such as local authorities, waste management companies and community sector organisations who provide alternatives to sending business waste to landfill sites. In order to ensure this resource was developed with the end-user in mind, SWAG has worked closely with both businesses and the waste management industry whilst developing the website.

The site includes tools for businesses to use, including a poster creator, frequently asked questions, and a number of useful links to other initiatives and organisations working with businesses to facilitate resource efficiency, such as Envirowise and the Business Environment Partnership (BEP). A 'how to' guide and case studies demonstrating how businesses have implemented recycling schemes and the cost savings achieved will be added over the coming months.

Waste Aware Business will be regularly updated and aims to provide a 'one-stop shop' style approach for businesses to access information on reusing and recycling their waste.

Launching the new service at Abbey Business Centre in Edinburgh, who currently receive a collection service from LEEP Recycling Ltd, Fiona Johnston, Waste Aware Business Campaigns Officer at SWAG said: “Commercial and industrial wastes account for around 75% of total waste generated in Scotland. As the cost of sending this to landfill sites continues to rise, businesses are starting to consider more economical alternatives to disposal such as reuse and recycling services.
“Waste Aware Business and its Business Recycling Directory will help them do this, by providing information and tools to allow them to become more resource efficient, whilst also providing environmental benefits.’’

Ken McLean of LEEP Recycling added: 'Working with the Edinburgh business community has allowed LEEP Recycling to develop customer-focused services that remove barriers to recycling and make it easy, cost effective and convenient for businesses of all sizes to participate fully in workplace recycling. The Waste Aware Business website is another useful tool that raises awareness of business waste issues and allows the business community access to a range of information from one central point.'
