2. New RSPB / CIWEM Saltmarsh Creation Handbook
Coastal saltmarsh is a habitat of great conservation value, recognised as such by international treaties and conventions as well as by European and United Kingdom legislation.
Around 600 ha of the United Kingdom saltmarsh resource were lost between 1992 and 1998 as a result of various causes and it has been projected that the UK will have lost around 8.5% of this habitat, as estimated in 1989, by 2012. English Nature is presently assuming the loss of 100ha of saltmarsh in England annually as a result of relative sea level rise.
These important issues are considered in “The saltmarsh creation handbook: a project manager’s guide to the creation of saltmarsh and intertidal mudflat” recently published by RSPB and CIWEM.
The handbook presents practical guidance on the restoration and creation of coastal saltmarsh and associated intertidal mudflat to help those involved in the planning and delivery of such schemes successfully realise their goals.
Following an introductory overview, the handbook covers issues arising in the project-planning phase. Site selection, scheme design, formulation of management plans, funding considerations, the current legal and planning context, the regulatory framework and the process of environmental impact assessment are addressed
The handbook then describes the practical techniques available to restore and create saltmarsh. It covers the engineering operations necessary to produce suitable site conditions and the establishment techniques employed to optimise/enhance site development. The case studies presented reflect the evolution of the approach from simple, small-scale, single function schemes to sophisticated, large-scale, multiple-function projects and illustrate how the practical techniques described have been applied to site-specific circumstances.
Technical terminology has been kept to a minimum to make the text accessible to the widest possible audience (hopefully everyone with an interest in the subject). Plates and figures have been widely used to illustrate the subject matter and extensive reference has been made to other publications in the field, relevant recent and on-going research projects and other sources of useful information
This important reference is now available from our book agents, Lead Media: Tel: 0870 3000 690 for the price of £29.99 plus postage and packing. Further details may be found at: http://www.ciwem.org.uk/publications/saltmarsh.asp
CIWEM Conferences are continuing to be well attended and regarded. Outputs from recent conferences may now be found on the CIWEM website at: http://www.ciwem.org.uk/events/outputs.asp
The World Wetlands Day Conference 2005 was in a new format, mixing multiple workshops with plenary sessions, and this proved very popular with the 200 delegates. We are already making plans for the 2006 conference.
The Public Participation conference in March 2005 was extremely popular and a new model of “marketplace” speakers was utilised.
We have a large number of sponsors and supporters for events in 2005, and bookings are going well. If you are interested in sponsoring any of the conferences noted below, please contact Justin Taberham, Email Justin@ciwem.org

CIWEM’s Wastewater Management Panel met in June, and discussed a range of forthcoming conferences, including the 2005 CIWEM National Conference, the 10th European Biosolids & Biowastes Conference. They also began planning conferences on Endocrine Active Substances, and Energy Saving Strategies in Water and Wastewater Treatment. The panel discussed the content of their forthcoming special edition of Water and Environment Magazine, which will be published in October 2005.
The Air Panel met later in the month, and also considered the range of articles that will feature in it’s second special edition of Water and Environment Magazine (November 2005). There was a discussion of the recent conference, developed by the panel, on Air Quality and Health, which had been a success and well received by delegates. It was agreed that there should be a follow-up conference next year. Panel members also discussed the possibility of contributing towards a Metropolitan Branch conference next year on climate change, and held a discussion about nuclear power as a future energy option.
5. CIWEM Global Environment Yearbook
The CIWEM Global Environment Yearbook has been renamed and relaunched for 2006. 6. Scientists and Engineers Needed as Assessors for City and Guilds of London Institute
CIWEM in partnership with City & Guilds of London Institute, (C&G) is now able to offer a pathway to membership and registration with the Science Council as Chartered Scientist, and Chartered Engineer with ECuk via the C&G Senior Awards. This route is designed specifically for those scientists and engineers who do not hold any formal qualifications but have gained their knowledge via their experiential learning.
Part of the process is the assessment of a thesis and an interview by a Panel convened by C&G. The Panel is constituted by members of Professional Bodies in addition to the C&G examining staff, and necessarily includes individuals with the same area of expertise as the applicants.
C&G are currently recruiting Assessors for this very interesting and important role for which they offer full training. If you are a scientist or an engineer who would be interested in participating in this partnership please can you contact Rosemary Butler, Director of Membership at CIWEM rbutler@ciwem.org.uk 020 7831 3110.

Do you find it difficult and expensive to obtain Professional Indemnity (PI) insurance?
CIWEM is aware that its members have found Professional Indemnity (PI) cover increasingly expensive and difficult to obtain in recent years, especially smaller firms and individual consultants.
