2. CIWEM Licensed for Science!
CIWEM is delighted to announce that the Science Council has approved the Institution's application for a licence to award the qualification of Chartered Scientist (CSi). This expands the portfolio of chartered status titles CIWEM is able to confer on Fellows or Members to Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv), Chartered Scientist (CSi), Chartered Engineer (CEng) and Chartered Water and Environmental Manager (CWem).
This means that in the near future an applicant for Fellow or Member who meets the Science Council's requirements in relation to their qualifications and professional experience will, in addition to their CIWEM membership, be eligible for registration as a Chartered Scientist.
For established members who qualify there will be a fast track route to CSi through a 'grandparenting' process. Full details together with an invitation to apply will be sent to each fellow or member shortly.
For further details please contact the Director or Membership, Rosemary Butler, on 020 7831 3110 or e-mail rbutler@ciwem.org.uk
3. Advertising Opportunities in E-News
Whilst E-News is first and foremost a simple and succinct technical newsletter focused on the activities of CIWEM and a small number of bodies and initiatives with which the Institution is involved, there is also a limited amount of space available in every newsletter for the placement of adverts.
Following the change to HTML format late last year, we are now able to offer banner space to potential advertisers.
Regular readers may also have noticed that the number of subscribers to E-News has grown from around 2000 this time last year, to approaching 5000 at the present time. A significant proportion of subscribers actively work within the sector for government, regulators and industry both within the UK and abroad. The exposure for advertisers is now clearly much improved.
Prices for text inserts of a maximum of 200 words are £100 + VAT for a single month or £200 + VAT for three consecutive months (can be different material). Prices for banners in the newsletter are £1000 + VAT per year.
We are happy to place adverts for companies, events, publications, job vacancies or anything else, which may be of interest to our readers. For further information or to place an advert please contact Alastair Chisholm, on 020 7831 3110 or e-mail alastair@ciwem.com
Tim Smit, CBE, Chief Executive and co-founder of the Eden Project is the invited guest speaker at CIWEM’s prestigious Annual Dinner on 22nd April 2004 at the Draper’s Hall, Throgmorton Avenue, in the City of London.
The Dinner is the annual event at which the President and members of the Institution’s Council entertain leading figures in the water and environment management profession. This includes Members of Parliament; the chief executives, directors and key people in the water companies, the environment agencies, government departments, environmental consultants and contractors and senior figures in a number of other organizations with which the Institution maintains close links.
The Eden Project in Cornwall has been called, “the eighth wonder of the world” and has attracted over 5 million visitors since it opened in 2000. But it is more than a tourist attraction. Eden is a major scientific foundation that has converted a derelict pit into a pioneering cradle of life that has harnessed new technologies with social enterprise and startling architecture.
CIWEM Executive Director, Nick Reeves, said, “In view of the Prime Minister, Tony Blair’s stated view that there should be closer ties between environmentalists and the business community CIWEM is particularly delighted to welcome Tim Smit to our Annual Dinner. As a broad church of environmental, science and business disciplines this Institution has a key role to play in fostering greater awareness of environmental issues and developing sustainable solutions to some of the world’s most pressing environmental problems. In this respect the Eden Project is a great example to us all.”
For further details of booking arrangements and sponsorship of tables at the Annual Dinner please contact Lorraine Poole on 020 7831 3110 or e-mail lorraine@ciwem.org.uk
5. New Year Honours for CIWEM Members
This year three CIWEM members were honoured in the New Year Honours list. These are:
Ilana Cravitz is CIWEM’s new – and first ever – Press and Communications Officer. With a voluntary sector background in human rights, development and environment, Ilana will now be letting a wider audience know about the huge range of interesting work CIWEM and its members are involved in. The creation of this new part time post follows a recent review of external communications and the development of a CIWEM Communications Plan, which will raise the public profile of the Institution.
Ilana would like to hear from you if:
Get in touch with Ilana by e-mail: ilana@ciwem.org.uk.
7. CIWEM Technical Panels update
At their meeting in January, the Water Supply and Quality Panel finalised the programme of their event on water quality at the tap, which is planned for mid-June 2004. Panel members discussed a comprehensive list of suggested event topics, which they had drawn up and agreed to scope an event on risk assessment approaches to water treatment, to be held in late 2004. They also discussed their involvement in CIWEM's second National Conference. The Panel updated the Policy Position Statement (PPS) on Fluoridation of Public Water Supplies, regarding the amendment to the Water Bill, which became law in late 2003, and discussed other PPSs in draft form, including Plumbosolvency, the Drinking Water Directive and Disinfection.
Soil ManagementThe aim of this conference is to help develop a practical agenda for change to enhance the protection and management of soil. To this end it brings together those who are closely involved in developing soil strategies with those who have leading experience in scientific research, policy and practice. It should contribute to the development of comprehensive strategies which are visionary, practical, and inspire change.

The CIWEM Ken Roberts Award for Technical Innovation in the Water Industry
A reminder that the deadline for entries for the CIWEM Ken Roberts Award for Technical Innovation in the Water Industry is 28th February 2004. The Ken Roberts Award was established jointly by CIWEM and Wessex Water in 1997 in memory of Ken Roberts FCIWEM, a Past President of the Institution (1979-80) and previously Chief Executive and Deputy Chairman of Wessex Water (1974-88), as a means of recognising technical innovation being made in the water industry.
The Award consists of a framed certificate and a cheque for £1000 (to be used to fund a proposal related to technical innovation in the water industry), which will be presented at the CIWEM Annual Dinner in London on 22nd April 2004. The competition is open to all CIWEM members and their employers. A named CIWEM member must have played a leading part in the entry submitted. Entries from the UK and overseas are welcome.
Submissions may relate to projects, research or other relevant work and will be judged on the following criteria:
Details of how to make a submission can be obtained from Helen Wilson at CIWEM, by e-mailing helen@ciwem.com and further information on the award can be obtained at www.ciwem.com/awards/
The CIWEM World of Difference Award supported by Black & Veatch
The World of Difference Award is a new annual award established as a means of rewarding the leading proponents of the practical application of science and engineering for environmental improvement. The Award focuses on innovative design in water and wastewater projects. Sponsored by Black & Veatch, a global engineering, construction and consulting company, the first Award will be presented at CIWEM’s Annual Dinner in London in April 2004.
The Award is international and open to all, with the exception of Black & Veatch projects. The size of the project is immaterial: small projects that make a big difference are encouraged to apply. Submissions from younger people are also encouraged. The judging panel will consider the originality of the concepts and take into account the age and experience of applicants.
Essential Criteria
To be eligible for the Award, projects must:
Submissions should be in the form of a succinct summary report, maximum ten A4 pages in length, including figures, tables and photographs. A hard copy of the submission should be sent to Helen Wilson at CIWEM at the address below, along with an electronic copy in MS Word format sent as an e-mail attachment (if the file size is under 1MB) to helen@ciwem.com or four individual copies sent on CD.
The Award winner will receive a trophy, a framed certificate and a cheque for £1000. The winning project and one runner-up project will be outlined in the CIWEM magazine.
The closing date for entries is 15th March 2004, and the Award will be presented at the CIWEM Annual Dinner on 22nd April 2004.
For further information about the Award, or to make a submission, please contact Helen Wilson at CIWEM, 15 John Street, London, WC1N 2EB (Tel: 020 7831 3110; E-mail: helen@ciwem.com).
This is a notice to all CIWEM members who have an AOL e-mail address. Due to the enormity of the level of ‘spam’ emails received from AOL email addresses, we have been advised that the only solution to the problem is to block all incoming emails sent from AOL addresses. We would be grateful if AOL users would send an alternative email address to membership@ciwem.com if you wish to continue to communicate with CIWEM via e-mail. Please note that this will not affect your subscription to ‘E-News’, as this is distributed from a different server.
MAIN 2004
The Membrane Academia Industry Network Conference, May 19 -20 2004, Cranfield University
MAIN 2004 represents the final event of the Membrane Academia Industry Network. MAIN was initiated in January 2000, with its principal aim of disseminating information between the industrial and academic membrane communities within the UK. Since then there have been three workshops and the development of a database of UK membrane plant and academic study ( www.cranfield.ac.uk/sims/water/mem-net/ )
The meeting presents the opportunity to exchange ideas and keep abreast of current trends in R&D, plant operation and performance, and governing regulatory and legislative issues. It comprises a 2-day meeting, culminating in an open discussion on the future of membrane technology in the municipal sector and the associated challenges to be met by the research institutions. Presentations will include keynote papers on membrane fouling characterisation by leading international researchers, along with papers in the general area of membrane science and technology as selected by the Scientific Committee from submitted papers. As well as publication of all presentations in the conference proceedings, papers will appear in a special edition of the CIWEM Journal, subject to the usual Journal peer review process.
CIWEM is working on responses to a number of public consultations, listed below. Should you wish to put forward any comments in relation to any of the consultations listed, please do not hesitate to contact either Helen Wilson or Alastair Chisholm as appropriate by the deadlines given.
