2. CIWEM Annual Conference – First Announcement and Call for Papers

CIWEM’s 4th Annual Conference – Emerging Environmental Issues and Future Challenges – will be held on 12th – 14th September 2006 at St James’ Park, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Whilst maintaining those activities which have proved attractive over the previous three years, a number of additions are being made to the format in order to widen the participation of the membership. This year’s event will feature a number of technical sessions organised around submitted papers and arranged into key themes identified by the CIWEM Technical Panels. Each day will see four such sessions running concurrently. The technical events are intended to reflect the strengths of the Institution as well as highlighting future policy directions and we are inviting abstracts to enable us to select papers for each of the key areas, namely:

However, we encourage submission of abstracts across the full breadth of activities undertaken by the membership and these will be organised into appropriate themes based on responses to the Call.

Further features of the conference to note are a 1-day session devoted to the interests of young members, a range of small workshop sessions on subjects such as Preparing an Odour Management Plan; Energy Saving Initiatives in Wastewater Treatment, or Reducing the Burden of Regulation. Proposals for other workshops will be welcomed. An innovation this year will be an hourly plenary session on each day where high profile, invited speakers will debate key issues identified by the Conference organising committee.

For further information and to view the call for papers, please visit: http://www.ciwem.org/events/4th_CIWEM_Conference_-_Sep_2006.pdf

3. Practical Environmental Management +

Jo Hall and Sam Dunkerley from Colourworks in Totnes, Devon successfully completed the Practical Environmental Management Plus course in September 2005, and the company also became verified to British Standard BS8555. This standard recognises sound environmental management and a commitment to ongoing control and improvement of environmental performance. Their business is print based, so the challenges the business faces are not inconsiderable.

Their objective is to go on and achieve ISO14001 in 2006.

Jo Hall, company secretary, said: “ … we were able to make significant developments to minimize the impact we were having on the environment.

To put that into some context, previously we would send around 28 skips of waste per month to landfill. After achieving BS 8555, this figure has astonishingly reduced to about 4 skips per month. For a start, this means the reduction in landfill costs is getting on for 90%.

With all paper used now being either recycled or from wholly sustainable sources, all printing inks being vegetable based and chemical usage significantly reduced in the printing process, all waste paper being sent for recycling, and continuing programme of improvement in all aspects of business, we are in a leading position that other printing works can only dream of.”

Carl Farrell from Groundwork, CIWEM's delivery partner, said: "There is huge environmental activity in the South West with 9 PEM+ courses running in Devon this year as part of the Envision Training partnership; with a target number of 40 delegates planned for 2006. We have already put 21 through the course in 2005 as a result of this initiative."

To find out more about the Practical Environmental Management course please go to: http://www.ciwem.org/education/management/index.asp.

4. CIWEM Submits Oral Evidence to House of Commons Committee

On 25th January, three CIWEM representatives submitted oral evidence to the House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee on its inquiry: Sustainable Housing: A Progress Report. Colin Fenn, Chairman of CIWEM’s Water Resources Panel, Jo Parker, member of Water Supply and Quality Panel, and David Pettifer, Chairman of Rivers and Coastal Group, attended the session and raised issues of concern regarding flooding and flood resilience issues in the Thames Gateway, water resources issues relating to the growth areas and infrastructure issues for sustainable homes. A full transcript of the evidence may be read on the Audit Committee’s website at:

5. Picturing the Environment

CIWEM is inviting entries for the third international WEM Environmental Photographer of the Year competition. The judges, including Baroness Barbara Young of the Environment Agency, will decide the winner of the first prize: £250-worth of vouchers to be spent on photographic equipment.

In addition, this year CIWEM is particularly encouraging entries that reflect the following themes:

Nick Reeves, CIWEM Executive Director, said:

“CIWEM is helping to highlight the small window of opportunity we have to make a difference on climate change. We hope that people of all ages will take this opportunity to look creatively at how we can get the environmental message across simply and effectively using pictures.”

Last year’s competition was won by Richard Hall, an amateur photographer from Yorkshire, for his picture of coastal sand dunes near Walberswick, Suffolk. Richard was also the winner of the People in the Environment category of the competition, and Simon Coutts won the Engineering in the Environment category for his picture of an old windmill and modern wind turbines.

The winning image will be available as a limited edition framed print, will feature in Water and Environment Magazine, CIWEM’s international publication, and will be promoted by CIWEM to the national media.

The closing date for entries is Friday 31 March 2006, and the winner will be announced on June 5th, World Environment Day. Anyone interested in entering the 2006 competition should contact wem@leadmedia.co.uk or visit http://www.ciwem.org/awards/

6. Journal Changes – Seeking Global Reviewers

From January 2006 CIWEM’s Journal – Water and Environment Journal will be published on behalf of CIWEM by Blackwell Publishing; in line with the changes we are increasing our reviewer database. Reviewers peer-review technical papers to determine their suitability for publication and advise on any amendments or revisions necessary such that papers are credible and accurate; enhance knowledge and understanding of water and environmental issues; promote sustainable development and are a credit to the standing and reputation of CIWEM and the profession.

This is a great opportunity to be involved in the work of the Institution and be the first to read exciting new research. We welcome applications from anyone with suitable expertise in a subject within the scope of water and environmental management, especially from those overseas. For more information or to submit your CV please contact Joanna Cooper (jcooper@ciwem.org).

7. Saltmarsh Creation Handbook

A groundbreaking new book published recently distils the best available knowledge on creating saltmarsh: a habitat that effectively combines nature conservation and flood defence. The saltmarsh creation handbook: a project manager’s guide to the creation of saltmarsh and intertidal mudflat is a practical guide from RSPB and CIWEM that sets out clearly how to restore and extend this vital part of our coastal landscape.

The 44,000 hectares of saltmarsh around the coasts of England, Scotland and Wales play host to a huge range of wildlife, and play a vital role in mitigating flooding and the damaging effects of storm surges, which are predicted to increase in size and frequency as a result of sea level rise due to climate change. Over the next few years, large areas of saltmarsh are likely to disappear under the sea as sea levels rise and stronger waves pound the coast, eroding the marshes and exposing sea defences to the full force of the sea’s impact.

The guide provides a comprehensive overview from start to finish of a project to create new areas of saltmarsh, including realistic timescales, and includes eight examples of saltmarsh creation projects of different scales. Topics covered range from engineering considerations and finding funding to stakeholder involvement and planning considerations. The authors make the process accessible and straightforward, focusing on detail including site selection, how to establish a mudflat, preparing an environmental impact assessment, equipment choice and engaging service providers.

The book is available from CIWEM (books@leadmedia.co.uk; www.ciwem.org/publications or tel 0870 3000690) at £29.99 + £4.95 p&p.

15. Stockholm Junior Water Prize

Young people with ideas to improve the quality of life through practical water projects can win an opportunity to attend an international event in Sweden as part of the international Stockholm Junior Water Prize competition. The winner will also receive a prize of $5000.

Winners of the national heats being held in 30 countries go on to the finals, held during World Water Week in Stockholm each August. The aim of the contest is to encourage young people’s interest in issues concerning water and the environment. The grand prize is US$ 5,000 and a blue crystal sculpture in the shape of a water droplet. Last year, a South African team won for their revolutionary solution to minimise the need for water in small-scale irrigation.

The UK heat is being organised by CIWEM, with United Utilities providing funds for the UK’s top team to attend the finals in Sweden over the next three years. The competition is organised in association with the Institution of Water Officers and the Worshipful Company of Water Conservators, and endorsed and promoted by the Environment Agency.

16. Small Scale Constructed Wetlands for Waste Water Reuse

Wednesday 15th February 2006 – Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, Imperial College London.

This event is built round the culmination of ongoing research on the Green Roof Water Recycling system (GROW) installed at Cranfield University. This is a programme which has been funded under the Partners in Innovation programme of the DTI (now concluded), and the event has been conceived as part of the dissemination process required by the grant.

This event, which is much broader than just GROW, brings together a rare combination of experts from not only the constructed wetland fraternity/ sorority, but also botanists with experience of wider range of plants, and also the potential client, as represented by the Home Builders' Federation who will give us an insight into the difficulties they might encounter in using these tools.

We have a broad range of speakers, a prestigious Chairman, and an unprecedented afternoon session to exchange ideas round the table.

The Workshop will include a simple lunch and refreshments and will cost £50.00. There will be a few places for students on application at £25.00.

18. Environmental Hazards and Risk Communication Conference

21-22 April – Royal Society, 6-9 Carlton House Terrace, London SW1Y 5AG

The nature and intensity of all types of environmental hazards are increasing globally, presenting a daunting challenge, not only for those involved in the modelling of hazard, but for those stakeholders involved in the estimation, mapping, management and mitigation of the associated societal risks. Despite huge advances in these fields, and a wide range of new tools to characterise the uncertainties embedded in hazard formulations by scientists, risk and uncertainty analysis is still very narrowly defined and understood within the scientific community. To communicate effectively at a societal level, however, the form of the risk communication message must necessarily be simultaneously context-specific, sensitive to those scientific models of the hazard, and sensitive to the needs of the recipient audience.

In a risk-averse society, which is increasingly cluttered with risk messages and with expectations of the message, recipients all demand new and evolving approaches to the communication process. The conference will ask how the experiences of both scientists and risk communication practitioners inform their views on future progress in improving risk communication practice by addressing a range of important questions.

Conference attendance is free of charge and refreshments and lunch will be provided. Limited places are available – please contact the conference coordinator Lisa Clarke (L.Clarke@mdx.ac.uk) by Tuesday 28 February 2006 if you are able to attend or for further details.
