1. The Environment - Vision, Values and Innovation
Time is running out for you to book your place at CIWEM's Annual Conference, running between 10th and 12th September, 2003 at the Harrogate International Centre.
The Environment is increasingly shaping the way we conduct business. Public Environmental concerns are reflected in the legislative process which releases additional funding and this in turn drives technological advances and engineering innovation.
The major environmental issues now cut across traditional subject disciplines and there is no monopoly on how we provide the environmental improvements that we all wish for. Global warming, energy use, water scarcity, waste, transport all require multidisciplinary teamwork. The CIWEM membership is in a unique position to meet these challenges in view of the diversity of its members and the wide range of subject disciplines covered by the Institution. This conference hopes to focus the vision of the membership in tackling environmental problems and to provide the CIWEM values which are enshrined in its Royal Charter.
The many innovative roles of CIWEM members in the fields of air, water, land and wastewater are brought together under a range of themes which have been drawn up to show the many common links in the work we do. A range of presentation formats will be used in order to achieve this. As well as the more formal keynote plenary, addresses the conference features specialised technical sessions, informal forums presented by key organisations, and open workshops which provide an introduction or a refresher course on a range of subject areas in which all practitioners should be familiar.
Finally throughout the three days there are specific sessions targeted at the younger audience to enable them to mix with their peers at similar stages in career development and form the links that always prove so useful in professional life.
The programme can be downloaded from CIWEM's website at: http://www.ciwem.com/documents/CIWEMNationalConference.pdf
For further information please contact Sarah Hickinson at Aqua Enviro
The CIWEM web site has just been re-launched. The fresh looking new site, designed by Parity Internet, is database-driven, which will enable provision of more information, interactive services and polling. New sections, including a 'Jobs Market', will be added over the coming months.
3. New Editorial Advisory Board for CIWEM's Water and Environmental Manager Magazine
CIWEM's magazine, Water and Environment Manager, performs an important public benefit role and aims to communicate environmental issues to the widest possible audience of professionals and the public alike. The magazine is published by CIWEM 10 times per year and embraces every aspect of the environment and related social issues. It has an international readership of around 80,000.
The complexity and diversity of environmental matters, together with the need for public engagement, demands continuous improvement of the magazine. CIWEM is now embarking on a number of change initiatives that are intended to meet the expectations of our readers.
With this in mind a new Editorial Advisory Board (EAB) is to be established. The Board will comprise senior and influential figures in the environment, science, business, NGO and other sectors and will comment on the editorial content of the magazine in order to independently inform the Institution of its development.
Members of the EAB currently include:
Paul Brown (Environment Correspondent, The Guardian)
Sir Ken Collins (Chairman of the Scottish Environment Protection Agency)
Sir Martin Doughty (Chairman of English Nature)
Sir Gareth Roberts (President of the Science Council and Wolfson College, Oxford)
Adrian Wilkes (Chairman of the Environmental Industries Commission)
Baroness Young (Chief Executive, Environment Agency)
Judy Ling Wong OBE (Chief Executive, Black Environment Network)

The CIWEM 2004 diary will be available from September at £10 (including VAT) plus £0.75 p&p, or £5 for a refill including VAT and p&p.
To order yours, contact Lorraine Poole, Email: lorraine@ciwem.org.uk
A number of CIWEM members have recently expressed concern that as of December 2003, access to construction sites by non-construction operatives / employees will become increasingly difficult due to a requirement by many major construction companies for CSCS (Construction Skills Certificate Scheme) cards to be carried by those on-site. Further information on the scheme may be found on the CSCS website at http://www.cscs.uk.com/
CIWEM has ascertained that those whose occupations are not covered by the scheme should write to CSCS (Peter Roberts, PO Box 114, Birchem Newton, Kings Lynn, Norfolk, PE31 6XD) and ask for a 'letter on non-availability'. This covers all sites, and should allow you access without difficulty.

The Awards are divided into seven categories: Community; Design; Heritage & Conservation; Partnership; Tourism; Waterside Development; Youth Projects & Education. The Awards will be judged in the Autumn by an independent assessment panel of waterway and regeneration experts and presented at a prestigious Awards Ceremony & Dinner hosted by John Craven on 16 March 2004. 11. Voluntary Service Overseas
VSO is continuing to see an increase in demand for specialist environmental professionals who are interested in applying their skills to a development context. In addition to the request for Renewable Energy Engineers mentioned last month, we also have opportunities for environmentalist working in community based natural resource management, including fisheries management.
For example, we currently have a request for up to five experienced environmental managers to work with fishing communities based around the Tonle Sap Lake in Cambodia. These placements form part of a wider initiative developing sustainable fisheries management and raising awareness of community fisheries.
In addition to accommodation, a local wage, health insurance and a series of grants, VSO will provide training in Khmer and how to ride a motorbike for field visits.
For more information, contact VSO on 020 8780 7500 or visit www.vso.org.uk
