The Sector
The UK's coastal and marine environments are some of the most beautiful in the world, supporting an astonishing diversity of habitats and species, as well as providing vital resources for economic development, food and recreation. However, coastal habitats are under increasing pressure from development, tourism and climate change, whilst further offshore, marine habitats and species are threatened by activities associated with fisheries, aggregate extraction and offshore energy developments. Scientists recommend that 20- 30% of our seas should be fully protected to ensure their survival. Marine conservation helps to raise awareness of these issues.

Issues and Trends
The conflicts of interest between environmental, social and economic needs should be addressed through moves towards sustainable development.  However, integrated and sustainable management of our coastal and marine resources lags behind that on land. There is an urgent need for the establishment of integrated coastal zone management and strategic spatial planning of activities in the marine environment.

Climate change is now one of the greatest threats to our seas and marine life. The impacts of climate change on our oceans include acidification and increased sea temperatures, leading to shifts in plankton and fish distribution. These changes will not only change the nature of our seas, but also have further impacts on human activities such as coastal developments, fisheries and recreational activities.

A draft marine bill is expected from the Government in 2008 which should protect our nationally important marine sites, species and habitats, and establish a co-ordinated and strategic system for planning and managing the many industries and activities that impact on and compete for use of the marine environment.
