Job Profile
Recycling officers are responsible for planning, developing and running local environmental and waste reduction and recycling policies and schemes.

Roles and Responsibilities
Jobs will vary according to each employer; however you could expect to be involved in:

• Developing waste reduction and recycling policies 
• Promoting recycling to the local community and media 
  Preparing and presenting outreach and education programmes 
• Promoting national environmental events 
  Working with groups such as charities, church groups and ngos to coordinate local recycling initiatives 
• Managing local recycling facilities and collection services 
• Introducing new recycling schemes 
• Monitoring and reporting on how often recycling services are used 
• Assessing tenders for work and managing contracts 
• Managing budgets and bidding for funding 
• Recruiting and training volunteers 
• Keeping up to date with best practice and current legislation

Qualifications
Relevant further education subjects include:
Biology; Chemistry; Environmental Sciences; Geology; Waste Management

Some employees ask for a degree or higher national diploma in a relevant subject. Others ask for a background that has given experience of waste management, communicating with the public and commercial skills.

Career Development
Training is normally on the job, with some recycling officers becoming waste managers.
