Tracey Smith – Monitoring and Data Officer (Environmental Protection), Environment Agency
I joined the National Rivers Authority (now the Environment Agency) in 1992, initially as a technical Assistant (Water Quality) following six years working with industrial chemical companies in the north west as an analytical Chemist/Research Technician after leaving school.
My next post with the Environment Agency was Scientific Support Officer (Environment Planning), where I worked with the landfill engineering team and gained experience in modern landfill design and operational issues.
In my current role as Monitoring Officer (Environment Protection) at the Agency’s Sale office in Cheshire, I have been instrumental in developing the water quality capabilities of Environmental Protection staff and providing training support of the recent launch of the Agency’s updated National Sampling Procedures Manual.
After leaving school with nine GCSEs, I gained an ONC (Science) qualification followed by an HNC (Chemistry) on day release at Blackburn Technical College and the Managing the Environment Open University qualification. I subsequently studied part time at Bolton Institute where I gained qualifications in Contaminated Land Reclamation and Geotechnical Engineering. I also gained a Diploma in Pollution Control through the Open University.
As part of my continued professional development, I gained the top UK mark in the CIWEM Certificate at Liverpool John Moores University in 2001/2002 and I have also gained my CIWEM Diploma and a distinction in my MSc in Water, Energy and the Environment. I taught the WPC module for post graduates at Liverpool John Moores University for two years after completing my MSc. I have recently completed a Certificate in Management Studies (CMS), but have no immediate intention of pursuing a career in people management!
