Grahame Newman (MSc, FCIWEM, C Env) – Programme Manager, Water Framework Directive, British Waterways

Grahame Newman (MSc, FCIWEM, C Env)I graduated in Zoology and then obtained an MSc in Environmental Pollution Science by part time study. Soon afterwards, I joined the Institute of Water Pollution Control, one of CIWEM’s predecessors.  Since then I have become a Chartered Water and Environmental Manager and a Chartered Environmentalist through CIWEM.

Following some years in the water industry, I moved to British Waterways (BW) as a water quality scientist in a team providing environmental support to the organisation. As the need for environmental professionals grew, I established and managed a team of water quality specialists.

Since then I have had several jobs working at corporate level advising the organisation on various aspects of environment policy.  My current job requires me to advise the organisation on how to respond to the future demands of the Water Framework Directive, and to liaise with other organisations to ensure that it is implemented in a way that reflects the needs of the business.

BW employs a range of water and environmental professionals, including hydrologists, ecologists, and environmental scientists.  They work closely with our engineers, water managers, and business development people to ensure that we use water efficiently and that the environmental impact of our activities is minimised, and that opportunities are taken to make enhancements where possible.

I have been active in CIWEM for some years, and am now a member of Council and Vice Chairman of the Business and Science Board. In BW, we consider CIWEM to be a key professional body for environmental staff and value it as a route for staff to achieve, and then maintain, chartered status.
